CHAPTER SIX

PRECISELY at 7:00 a.m. Saturday morning, she walked down the floatation dock toward the moored seaplane. She had two small cases, one in each hand. The tailored slacks were comfortable, and she hoped baggy enough to disguise her figure. She was getting good at this, she thought wryly. Too bad it wasn’t some kind of skill she’d need later in her career.

“Prompt as ever,” Matt said as he climbed from the cockpit. He was dressed in dark cords, and the white cable-knit sweater he’d worn last weekend. His hair wasn’t as immaculate as in the office, and Karla had that familiar urge to run her fingers through it, just to feel the texture, to connect with him.

That would shock his socks off, she thought, if his staid assistant made a move on him. For a moment she was sorely tempted.

He reached for her cases. “Ever flown in one of these?”

She shook her head, looking at the aircraft with a bit of hesitation as it bobbed on the water.

“A lot more fun than the big commercial planes. Hop aboard.” He held his hand for her to steady herself, and motioned to the pontoon.

She could see the skid-resistant patch on the metal and carefully placed her foot on it. The plane tipped slightly when her full weight rested on the pontoon, but Matt quickly assisted her into the tiny cockpit.

She bumped her head on the low ceiling and immediately checked the wig to make sure it hadn’t been knocked askew. Hoping everything looked normal, Karla sat in the seat indicated and gazed around with interest.

Matt released the mooring lines and climbed inside, closing the door. The space in the cockpit seemed to shrink. Karla watched as he eased himself into the pilot’s seat and began throwing switches.

“When did you learn to fly?” she asked as Matt buckled the seat belt and reached for the earphones.

“When I first got out of the university. It was one of those challenges I couldn’t resist. And it’s proved beneficial over the years.”

“For getting away to the wilderness,” she murmured, fastening her own seat belt.

He glanced at her with a puzzled look. “Right. I told you about that?”

She nodded, once again feeling the breath of danger. He had told her, but as Jeannette or Karla? Sheesh, she was getting everything mixed up. How would she keep it all straight?

He started the engines and soon they were skimming over the water of Coal Harbour. Almost before she knew it, they were airborne. Vancouver spread out below them, like a miniature city. Karla was enchanted with the view. That feeling fled instantly when they hit an air pocket and dipped.

“Oh!” She clutched the armrests of her seat. “Are we okay?”

“Sure. No problems,” he said with a look. “You’ve lived here all your life, tell me what we’re seeing as we head north.”

It was easier than she had thought to recognize landmarks from the air, and she was glad to have her mind focused on something besides Matt as they flew along.
